Hidemichi Tai –2020

Hidemichi, a devoted supporter of Swarthmore’s Japanese program, died July 23, 2020.

Hidemichi received an MBA from Columbia University and remained a staunch advocate for Swarthmore. He donated to the Japanese Summer Language Fellowship that enabled students to accelerate their language studies and also have the opportunity to live with a Japanese host family and experience life in a Japanese community.

Hidemichi was a warm and cheerful presence on Hallowell first floor freshman year. If you were feeling low just seeing his bright smile and hearing his hearty laugh could cheer you up. I felt lucky to have "Michi" as a friend and was thrilled to reconnect at our 40th reunion. He wanted all of us to come visit him at his place on the coast south of Tokyo and I'm sorry I never got there. He will be missed.

I was David Shilton's roommate on that Hallowell 1st floor hall our Freshman year.  Michi was a delight and introduced all of us to Ramen noodles...what a taste treat to this Philadelphia boy who thought the height of culinary arts was a cheese steak ( which is actually still high on my list and I will be bringing cheese steaks back to DC from my favorite place, Pinncolos, in Media).

Hidemichi was one of the highlights of the 40th Reunion!  I loved hearing about his travels across country to arrive at Swarthmore. Many hilarious adventures and remarkable resilience on his part!  A whole different side to his personality. A lovely spirit.
